Can a Toucan Hoot Too?
This is the first book in a series of phonemic awareness tales that entertain Pre-K through first graders while educating them on early literacy and beginning reading skills. This book teaches the following early elementary skills required for later reading success:
- Discriminating and identifying sounds in spoken language
- Awareness of beginning and ending sounds of words
- Matching sounds and rhymes
- Awareness of separate words in sentences and separate syllables/sounds in words
- Associating sounds with written letters and words
- Manipulating sounds and syllables to create new words (phonemic/phonological awareness)
- Language concepts
For the benefit of parents, speech-language pathologists, and Head Start, Pre-K and early elementary teachers, a section is included in the back of the book with targeted skills and suggested activities.
The repetition in this book is excellent for ESL students, students at risk for dyslexia, and students in speech/language programs.
