Playing with Idioms

These reproducible card games and gameboards are the perfect follow-up to Don't Take It So Literally! After students have learned the meanings of the 60 idioms presented in the previous material, they can practice incorporating those idioms into everyday speech.

The activities are organized into three levels of difficulty:

Level 1 introduces 90 different situations, each accompanied by three idioms. Students select the idiom that best completes the situation.

Level 2 presents 90 additional situations. Students complete each situation by choosing from an increasing number of idioms.

Level 3 consists of open-ended activities in which students make up appropriate situations for each idiom. Group interaction is emphasized, with students analyzing and discussing each situation.

The materials contain:

  • Reproducible situation cards
  • Reproducible idiom cards
  • Reproducible board games
  • Reproducible spinner

Suggested activities for Levels 1, 2 and 3

These versatile materials permit a variety of applications with a wide range of students - use the game format as a motivational device, present only the situation and/or idiom cards or even adapt the situations for adult use. The level and type of activity is up to you.
